
Southern Foods was founded in November 1954 by Victor Nussbaum Jr. Mr. Nussbaum believed that he could create a business to support his growing family by delivering the best meats available to local homes in Greensboro, North Carolina.
With nothing more than his dream, Mr. Nussbaum bought a used pick-up truck, hired a driver for delivery and a girl for the office and started knocking on doors to see if anyone wanted to buy food in a different and better way. Those first few months he had just eight customers.
Slowly the company began to establish a reputation as purveyor of high-quality food. Week by week, month by month the company delivered more and more quality food to an expanding customer list. A few more employees were hired. Another truck was purchased, then a building. Then an addition was put on the building.

After a few years, local restaurants in the Greensboro area began asking Mr. Nussbaum for his hand cut steaks and fresh ground beef. This provided the start for the restaurant division of Southern Foods.
As the business began to grow and change so did the South. Southern Foods soon found itself expanding from Greensboro to all of North and South Carolina, Georgia and southern Virginia.

Over the past fifty-five years, Southern Foods has built a strong reputation based upon quality products, integrity, competitive pricing and exceptional service. We are now a minority and veteran-owned company and as the new owners, we value the partnerships with our customers and are committed to your long-term success.
Today Southern Foods is committed to bringing you "Clean and Green" products that show respect to our environment. As we have grown with the "Green Movement," we have brought in a new line – Vegware – that makes earth friendly packaging materials including utensils and "to go" containers, and we continue to work on all aspects of the "Green" philosophy.
As a proud member of the "Goodness Grows in North Carolina," we continually search for local, sustainable, farmers and growers that share the visions of "Farm to Fork."
We are communicating with our distributors, manufacturers and processors while working toward our goals of of sustainable local foods, environmentally friendly and cleaner, natural product lines.
